I first came across the TCT a few years ago when I was looking for something more meaningful than just a vacation. I wanted a connection to a place, to a community, and a purpose.
That’s exactly what this volunteer program offered. In this article, I want to share more about voluntourism in Armenia and extend a heartfelt invitation for you to join this impactful journey.
What is Voluntourism in Armenia?
Voluntourism is a form of travel that combines volunteering with tourism, where travelers contribute time and skills to support local communities or environmental projects while exploring a new place.
It’s about making a positive impact while experiencing meaningful cultural exchange.
So, what is the Transcaucasian Trail?
In short, it’s an ambitious, long-distance hiking trail that, once complete, will weave more than 3,000 kilometers through the Caucasus. It also includes the Legends Trail, which I helped to create by photographing and marking the trails.
The trail is a bridge connecting cultures, communities, and landscapes that have been divided by borders and time. But building that bridge takes hands.
It takes people – real, passionate people – who are willing to sweat a little, laugh a lot, and help carve a path through some of the most stunning terrain you’ve probably never heard of.
In Armenia, the trail meanders through lush forests, past ancient monasteries carved into cliffs, and through villages where life still moves to the rhythm of nature.
One of the trail’s most beautiful stretches is in Dilijan National Park, a mountain paradise often called the “Switzerland of Armenia.” That’s where our 2025 volunteer camps will be based.
What it’s Like to be a Voluntourist
Let me be honest: this isn’t luxury travel. You’ll be sleeping in tents, digging dirt, carrying stones, and breaking a sweat most days.
But that’s exactly what makes it so rewarding. There’s something primal and grounding about spending your days shaping a trail with your hands, then sitting around a campfire at night, sharing stories with people from all over the world.
You don’t need to be a wilderness expert or a construction worker. Voluntourists come from all walks of life – teachers, students, artists, engineers, adventurers, and first-time travelers.
The TCT crew provides all the training and tools you’ll need. What they ask in return is simple: show up with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a respect for the land and the people.
I still remember my first week. The days were long, sure—but they flew by. I learned how to build a sustainable trail, how to spot and remove invasive plants, and even how to cook lavash (Armenian flatbread) over an open fire.
I’ll never forget the moment we finished a tough section of trail, and one of the local hikers passed by and thanked us. “You’re building something we’ll all use,” she said. That stuck with me.
Why Armenia?
Armenia is unlike any place I’ve been. It’s raw, honest, and deeply proud of its roots. This is a country with over 3,000 years of history – and it shows.
You’ll stumble upon centuries-old monasteries hidden in the woods, stone khachkars (cross-stones) by the roadside, and locals who invite you in for coffee within five minutes of meeting you.
But Armenia is also a country in transition. Like many places, it’s navigating how to balance tourism and tradition, development and preservation.
That’s where projects like the TCT come in. By building sustainable trails, we help channel tourism into rural areas that need it most.
The trail brings hikers into villages where they stay in guesthouses, buy local food, and experience the culture firsthand. It’s travel that uplifts, rather than disrupts.
