Located in northern Armenia, Stepanavan is one of the most beautiful places in the Lori region, known to be a town with sanatoriums and cozy guesthouses.
In this article, I will write about how to easily get from Yerevan to Stepanavan, and will also talk about multiple options, including renting a car in Armenia to drive to Stepanavan from Yerevan and more.
Stepanavan is located right next to the famous Lori Berd (Fortress), and what puts Stepanavan on the Armenian travel map is the Stepanavan Dendropark, which is a unique natural place.
I strongly recommend visiting Stepanavan Dendropark if you are planning to stay in Stepanavan for several days, and also Golden Lily Lakes to see blooming lilies if you are visiting in the first part of July.
How To Get From Yerevan To Stepanavan
There are 5 ways to get from Yerevan to Stepanavan, and each option has a different time range suitable for everyone. See the options below:
- From Yerevan to Stepanavan by Minibus (more than 2 hours)

- From Yerevan to Stepanavan by Train (around 4 hours)
- Rent a Car to drive to Stepanavan from Yerevan (2 hours)
Minibus to Stepanavan
Stepanavan is approximately 157 kilometers (98 miles) from Yerevan. One of the cheapest ways to get to the spa town is to take a bus or minibus (marshrutka) from Kilikia Bus Station, also known as Central Bus Station.
The minibus 411 to Stepanavan leaves from Yerevan daily from 11:30 AM to 18:00 PM. The price per person is 1500 AMD ($4).
- Here you can find the Central Bus Station address.
Pro Tip: If you are planning to also visit Vanadzor, the third biggest city in Armenia, then I suggest getting from Yerevan to Vanadzor early in the morning, sightseeing there, and then taking a bus or taxi to Stepanavan.
Taxi To Stepanavan
A taxi from Yerevan to Stepanavan will cost approximately 20,000 AMD (approximately 52 USD).
This option will be the most expensive one, and if you have a limited budget, it may not be suitable for you. However, you can take a taxi to Stepanavan if you are traveling with a group of people.
Train To Stepanavan
While there’s no direct train to Stepanavan from Yerevan, you can take a train to Vanadzor, which is the final stop on that line. The ride is approximately 4 hours. From there, you can take a taxi or public transportation to Stepanavan.
This route is part of the larger Yerevan-Tbilisi railway service (train numbers 371 and 372), with departures from Sasuntsi David Train Station and a stop at Vanadzor’s central station.
Be aware that this is the slowest travel option, taking about four hours. For tickets, you can book online via the Armenian Railways official website or purchase them directly at Sasuntsi David Train Station if you encounter any booking issues.
Rent a Car in Armenia
One of the most flexible options for traveling in Armenia is to rent a car, especially if you are traveling in summer, so you can use the AC and stop wherever you want to sightsee without rushing. The roads are great and newly renovated.
