How to Easily Get from Yerevan to Noravank Monastery
Taking a taxi is probably the fastest way, as local drivers navigate the roads very efficiently, although it can be more expensive than renting a car.
I briefly considered using public transportation, but that option requires a fair bit of walking once you arrive same way if you want to get back from Noravank to Yerevan.
Alternatively, joining a guided tour to Noravank is what I highly recommend, and it’s how I first experienced the gorgeous monastery.
Tours usually simplify the trip and often include other great sights like Areni, Khor Virap, and sometimes even Tatev Monastery.
Bus to Noravank
Unfortunately, there is no direct public transportation to Noravank. I would have had to take a bus to a nearby town and then walk, hitchhike, or grab a taxi from there.
Given how adventurous I wanted to be, or the size of my group, it felt simpler to choose another option until direct routes become more common.
I found that I could take a bus from Kilikia Bus Station to Yeghegnadzor for about 2,000 AMD ($5), and then take a taxi from Yeghegnadzor to Noravank, which will cost around 2,500 AMD ($7).
If I chose this route, the total cost would be around $12 (4,000 AMD) per person once the final taxi ride was included.
Departure time from Yerevan: 2 times daily at 13:00 and 16:00
Address: Klilika Bus Station
Rental Car
Renting a car in Armenia is a comfortable way to drive in a foreign country. Renting a car was a great choice, especially for the freedom to set my own schedule.
While Google Maps suggests the drive is around 2 hours, and even though the roads are brand new, my experience tells me it will take closer to 3 hours because of the serpentine roads, so I kept that in mind when planning.
It’s smart to schedule extra time, as Khor Virap is right on the way south to Noravank.

Taxi to Noravank
Taking a taxi felt like the most comfortable choice, saving me the worry of driving and often getting me there quicker, especially if I didn’t plan any stops.
Most drivers are fine with waiting to drive you back or taking you around, but I always make sure to negotiate that beforehand or specify it clearly in the Yerevan taxi app (like Yandex or GG Taxi).
Apps offer more transparency with the price placed in the initial fare, whereas street taxis require negotiation. A taxi to Noravank usually costs me about 12,000 AMD ($32) or a bit more, depending on the day and demand.
Noravank Tours
In my honest opinion, the easiest way to get there is through an organized tour to Noravank. The public transport options in Armenia are limited right now, and a tour offers comfort and handles all the tiny details I might otherwise forget.
If I don’t feel like renting a car and traveling independently, this is definitely the best option, and the tours from Yerevan always include other popular sights like the Areni cave (the world’s oldest winery), Khor Virap, and more.
